History is an interesting thing when you look at who or what owned what, from slavery to land. The freedom of this ownership is celebrated. A country that doesn't have that to celebrate seems to have less national pride than a country that does.
Such a country would thus be proud of times of international competition, such as the Olympics.
Also, 50% of the world will have a cell phone by the end of the year, but how developed is the world that half of us can talk to each other yet so many of us don't have the basic necessities of life.
